Policy to Promote More Sustainable Bamboo and Rattan Sector in Vietnam Approved

HANOI, February 18, 2011 -- Vietnam's Prime Minister today approved a national policy to promote the development of the rattan and bamboo sector. The export revenue from rattan and bamboo products ranks second in Vietnam among its handicraft products and generates thousands of jobs for laborers in rural areas. Policymakers of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development believe that the promotion of bamboo and rattan as viable cash crops will serve as a vehicle to improve the quality of life of rural communities through employment and income generating opportunities. The policy is expected to help encourage organizations and individuals to make investments in the rattan and bamboo production sector, meet the needs for rattan and bamboo products in and outside the country, and increase export revenue. The successful development of the policy was made possible by the support of the USAID-funded Asia Regional Biodiversity Conservation Program (ARBCP).

USAID Helps Vietnam Examine Climate Change Impacts on Agriculture

HANOI, December 16, 2010 -- Environment and agricultural experts gathered in Hanoi today for a National Workshop on Effects of Climate Change on Crop Production in Vietnam. The workshop shared the results of a field study on the expected impacts of climate change to maize, soybean, and cashew production in the northern mountainous and central highland regions of Vietnam. It also addressed the current needs of the localities in developing these products, in line with the 2020 national strategy on crop production. Potential projects were proposed to ensure future food security and farmers' income, which will be improved based on feedback from the workshop. The event was organized by the Department of Crop Production under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the USAID-funded Asia Regional Biodiversity Conservation Program (ARBCP). Over the last two months, two workshops of this type were also conducted in the central highlands and in the north of Vietnam. ARBCP provided support to the field study and series of workshops with the aim to build the database on forecasted climate change impacts on crop production, raise awareness and capacity of localities, and mobilize international and national resources for essential adaptation measures in this sector in Vietnam.
